In case it’s not obvious, Julien as a kid was raised on Captain Beefheart, Mouse on Mars, Sugarcubes, Brian Eno and Sigur Ros. In a peaceful little village in the dunes called Santpoort, where he had years of classical training before moving on to the digital realm. But inspired by nature as well as improvisation he utilizes a wide variety of samples and acoustic instruments along with the more electronic elements.
What also informs his music is a lifelong talent for lucid dreaming. An example he cites is the trumpet of a death march… a concrete thought that quickly steers wildly out of context. These fragments combine together to form the basis for his fantastically deluxe EP ‘When Will You Wake Up’.
❝Julien Mier is a young producer from the Netherlands who just made his debut with “When Will You Wake Up?” on Canadian King Deluxe Records. The title track “Watercolour Sky” starts with rolling drums reminiscent of ancient tribal rituals but the cut up vocal samples and sonical details let it develop into a dance tune quickly.
The intimate details continue throughout the EP and the tracks built up nicely with various changes. Especially on songs like “Rainbow Covered Home” the abstract vocal samples – which have been cut unmeasurably – create a unique atmosphere.
Despite some of the tunes being quite overloaded with too many elements fighting for the listeners attention and some room for the arrangements to grow more sophisticated, this is more than just a solid release and I am looking forward to see how he will develop his ear for details and vocals in the future.❞
