Review: Darling Farah – Body (LP 12”/digital, Civil Music, 2012)

20-year-old producer Darling Farah, born in techno city Detroit and currently based in London, blessed us with a pair of solid dance music EPs in 2011 as well as a blazing appearance on Boiler Room in July this year, showcasing bits of his latest release, his debut full length “Body”, a surprisingly low-key yet mature album.

❝It’s one of those albums that unfold their richness the more often you listen to it. At first listen, it comes across like a selection of short unfinished sketches where each track has a life of its own. But a sophisticated beat pattern loops over the entire album and eventually pulls it together to form a perfectly complimentary soundscape of dark, percussive techno music in its most reduced form. The track ‘Bruised’ comes as a late highlight of the album with haunted vocals and background chatter hidden behind synth winds and a rattling kick drum. It’s that sort of clean deep techno that achieves a maximum of atmosphere with a minimum of elements, leaving enough space for the sounds to take full effect and allowing the listener to pay attention to every detail.❞
