FINEST EGO | Monthly Trip with Kidkanevil and Amenta

We are very pleased to announce our guests for our upcoming Monthly Trip on the 19th of November! RBMA alumni kidkanevil (UK) and Amenta (Canada) will perform together at Panke, Berlin. Supporting DJs will be DJ Werd, Radio&Fernseh and Malte.

While kidkanevil, also being a member of Stateless (Ninja Tune), already released three albums, a remix album, plus various other projects on First Word Records (working together with such artists as Bonobo, Jehst, Lateef, Andreya Triana, Illum Sphere, Mr Thing, Natural Self, DJ Vadim & Yarah Bravo amongst many others), Amenta has just released her first very well received deput EP “Sacred Places” on the same label. However, in her music-career she has already worked with such prolific producers as Blue Daisy, Mau’Lin, fLako, kidKanevil, Om Unit, Clinic, Lost Twin and Throwing Snow, most of whom can also be found on her EP.

LONG ARM “ORGANIC” RECORD RELEASE PARTY – BERLIN

English:
On the 14th of October, one of the most gifted young producers in the area of abstract instrumental hip hop, Long Arm from Russia, will be playing in “Panke“, Berlin. His debut album “The Branches“, released on Project: Mooncircle, made it into radio shows of Mary Anne Hobbs (XFM) as well as Gilles Peterson‘s “All Winners” show on BBC Radio 1, his personal list of favorites of the year 2011 so far. Anyone who troubles oneself about looking for videos of live performances by the Orenburg native, will soon notice how the classically trained jazz pianist manages to create a dense sound-atmosphere you would not usually expect from a single person but rather from a complete jazz-orchestra, drum-section included. His sophomore release “Organic“, a collection of new and unreleased songs but also remix versions from the likes of Daisuke Tanabe, Krts and FiJi & Eugenia Peters, will be coming out at the end of September, also on Project: Mooncircle. He will be accompanied by Graciela Maria (Mexico), who will also have a guest appearance on “Organic”, Sneaky (Fingathing / Ninja Tune), V. Raeter (Ecke Prenz / Spoken View), Gordon Gieseking (Project Squared / Finest Ego / P:MC) as well as Jinna Morocha, a young russian label-mate of Project: Mooncircle, now residing in Berlin.

ROBOT KOCH “THE OTHER SIDE” RECORD RELEASE PARTY – BERLIN

Although Robot Koch has an international reputation as being “One of Europe`s finest producers of the beat generation“ (Low End Theory), he is much more than just a beatmaker… “(Post)-dubstep infused Electronic Hip Hop“ is far too constrained a label to understand what this producer is all about. Instead of following the sound of his previous albums “Death Star Droid” (“Essential listening” – Bobby Friction BBC) and “Songs For Trees and Cyborgs“ (“Music for a modern age that has rarely sounded so good” – Boomkat), Koch takes the genre defying ingredients from these previous records to another level. There still are some of those “Galactic ten ton beats and space age melodies“ (Dazed and Confused) that made the previous albums staple drops in the playlists of Mary Anne Hobbs, Starkey, Daedelus and Gas Lamp Killer to name a few, but there is a new dimension to Koch`s production and songwriting that didn’t show on his previous records.

The cinematic vibe of tracks like “Nitesky”, the quirky and moody feel of “Bugs” and the electricity of “Tapedeck” show how Koch more than ever manages to create intimate and timeless pieces of music that are soulful, deep, mysterious and that will appeal to fans of cutting edge Electronica and modern pop music alike. This is the most personal record of Robot Koch to date. Instead of going for big name features Koch teamed up with lesser know artists like Kansas based vocal talent John LaMonica, long time friend and theatre composer Nielson and mexican singer/songwriter Graciela Maria to find the right voices for his compositions. John LaMonica infuses his whimsical and heartfelt melodies that breathe an air of darkness and nostalgia with Koch`s fresh and forward thinking instrumentals to create something that fans of Radiohead, The XX and Jamie Lidell should not sleep on.

Support for the night is Jinna Morocha, a young russian label-mate of Project: Mooncircle, now residing in Berlin.

FINEST EGO present: DZA’S “SUPERSHARK” EP RECORD RELEASE PARTY

The third “Monthly Trip” at Panke (18th of June), we will be celebrating the release of the “Supershark” EP by the russian producer DZA (of Black Acre, Project: Mooncircle, Error Broadcast), who will also show us his crazy live skills.
Together with the Finest Ego DJ’s Gordon, Area Boy, Binh & Puzzle, we will have a wide range of musical styles and genres like Hip Hop, Electronic, Dubstep, Wonky and Glitch clashing throughout the night.

Sasha Kholenko is DZA, a Russian beat-maker and producer at the forefront of the scene in Russia and quickly invading the rest of the world with his unique electronic hip-hop creations. At the beginning of 2010, Jus Like Music made contact with DZA and then met with him at the Red Bull Music Academy in London where he was a participant. DZA submitted his track, Shifty, to the Oscillations compilation released last year by Jus Like Music Records. Since then, DZA has gone on to create releases for Error Broadcast and Black Acre Records, but now he is back with his Supershark EP.

A joint release between Jus Like Music Records and Project Mooncircle, the Supershark EP, is a hectic array of electronic mayhem with synths, bleeps and heavy beats. This release stands apart from the crowd with its exceptional layering of anarchic sounds over strong, unwavering, hip-hop-influenced beats and breaks. DZA’s ability to weave electronic sounds to create atmosphere and feeling is nothing short of astounding. 16 minutes of pure inspiration that will make even the most seasoned heads look up and take note.

FINEST EGO | WEEKEND DOCUMENTATION #01 – BEATMAKER CHALLENGE

The first part of our documentation is about the Beatmaker Challenge at the Finest Ego | Weekend with all participants!

FINEST EGO | WEEKEND DOCUMENTATION #02 – LIVE SHOWS / INTERVIEWS with Teebs, fLako, Robot Koch, Blue Daisy, Comfort Fit and Jeremiah Jae

The 2nd documentation is about the live shows / interviews at the Finest Ego | Weekend with acts like Teebs (Brainfeeder), fLako (Project: Mooncircle), Blue Daisy (Black Acre), Comfort Fit (Project: Mooncircle) and Jeremiah Jae (Warp / Brainfeeder) and Robot Koch (Project: Mooncircle).

Production & Camera: Thomas Krueger, Martin Pohle, Roman Besser und Max Winter | Interviews: Malte Tarnow & Erjee Vroling | Creative Direction: Martin Pohle, Malte Tarnow, Erjee Vroling & Thomas Krueger | Final Edit & Grading: Thomas Grummt | Design: LGB5

On the 19th & 20th of March the “Finest Ego Weekend” will take place in Berlin, kicking off the new international artist-network called “Finest Ego” (http://www.finestego.com), a platform and community for young, innovate producers and music lovers in and around the constantly changing and evolving bass music continuum. On these two days, some of the most active and prolific international producers as well as unknown young talents from all around Europe will come together on the banks of the River Spree. Whilst, on Saturday afternoon, renowned producers will host workshops and give insight into their music creation process and production-techniques, the programm for the evening will focus on live-music and culminate in a party during both days. With Robot Koch, fLako, Blue Daisy, Comfort Fit and the two Flying Lotus protégés Teebs and Jeremiah Jae, the “Finest Ego Weekend” will host headliners which represent the future of hiphop in a fascinating unique way. Having developed autonomously from american chart-dominance in the last few years, a new sound has evolved between the US and Europe, which at the same time ties in 30 years of hiphop tradition, whilst also connecting to the abstract structures of electronic music and the depth of clubmusic. The live- and dj-sets, largely never before seen in Germany, are easily a contender for highlight of the year even for a city like Berlin. Furthermore, winners of the “Finest Ego Beatmaker Competition”, will showcase their beats, productions and performances for the first time in front of an international audience. Hosted by Erjee, part of the producer team “Killing Skills” and organizer of the “Drop”-challenges in Amsterdam, the up-and-coming producers will take on the audience and will have the chance to win studio-equipment, like the Native Instruments Maschine, as well as a record deal with Finest Ego Records and Project: Mooncircle.

The “Finest Ego Weekend” will carry the main thought behind the Finest Ego Community; to be  an aggregator and a collective for young, talented and unknown but also established producers free of all the boundaries of styles and genres, and connect the steadily evolving and changing bass music scene. Exchange and synergy between the young and established producers and their creative visions including the audience and press are to be encouraged. Providing artist-features, reviews and exclusive tracks, Finest Ego is not only a publishing-platform but also a connecting hub between such diverse social networks as Facebook, Twitter and Soundcloud. Furthermore, Finest Ego has already released two compilations focusing on producers from Japan, and Russia, will release another focusing on New New Zealand / Australia in the near future, and is currently preparing future compilations like Germany, Austria & Switzerland.

Finest Ego Beatmaker Competition

The producers (at least 18 years of age), send their productions and/or videos of their live-performances via e-mail (finestego@googlemail.com) or via the Soundcloud Dropbox (http://soundcloud.com/finestego/dropbox) to the Finest Ego team (deadline – March 1st, 2011!). From these submissions the team and community will select the most outstanding applicants, who will have the chance to present their music in a 10 minute live-set on stage at the club Chez Jacki on the 19th of March within the programm of the “Finest Ego Weekend”.

In this process the audience will not only evaluate the sound of their productions but also the quality of the participant’s live-performances, as judged by the crowds reactions. The participants will have the opportunity to win not only the possibility of a release on Finest Ego Records / Project: Mooncircle, but also a Native Instruments Maschine, Native Instruments Komplete 7, a Native Instruments Maschine Bag, as well as further prizes like headphones from WeSC, clothing articles from WeSC, Mishka and Acrylik and hhv.de gift-certificates for records and other articles.

„Svetlana Industries Mixtape #1“ by Teebs: Download

Teebs, born as Mtendere (pronounced “ten-de-ra”) (Chichewa for “Peace”) Mandowa in New York to Malawi and Barbados origins, is a 23 year-old producer who bounced around the East Coast before finally planting his feet in the Southern California suburb of Chino Hills.
Music may have come by accident, literally. A skateboard injury sidelined Teebs, which led to a concentration on art. Through great focus and vision, Teebs made a name for himself as a skilled painter. His artwork found on canvases of all form, from walls to record covers, become imbued with vibrant color, energy, and shape.
From paint and brush, Teebs slowly found himself in the world of music making. Early in his musical pursuits, Teebs joined a group of like-minded friends and producers who went by the name ‘My Hollow Drum’. Within this crew, he was able to build new ideas, share works and perfect his production craft. Intrigued with what was going on in Los Angeles’ evolving electronic scene, he never expected to fall directly into it.
Teebs was accepted into the Red Bull Music Academy for their 2008 edition in Barcelona, Spain. Upon arrival back home, Teebs became even more focused on his music and art. A chance meeting with Flying Lotus led to his involvement and joining of the newly founded Brainfeeder collective. Having previously heard from local producers and DJs about this new up and comer, Lotus didn’t hesitate to take Teebs under his wing after hearing some of his earliest beats. Ardour began to bloom.
Ardour, two years in the making, is the result of Teebs’ journey thus far. More than the music, it’s the feeling he wants to convey. The idea of hearing something you really love, the moment you know something is really special. Flying Lotus said, “Teebs music sounds like an island vacation…The way Avatar looks.” What’s often said about Teebs’ sound is the warmth it has on the listener. It’s only fitting that a title like Ardour, which is defined as “great intensity and warmth” is used to represent this essential chapter to the ever-growing puzzle of Los Angeles.
Finest Ego is proud to invite Teebs the first time to Germany for this very special show!

Jeremiah Jae – Jackson Park (produced by Flying Lotus): Download

Jeremiah Jae is a visual artist, musician, producer, and emcee hailing from Chicago’s south side. Born June 7, 1989, he is the son of Robert Irving III, who played, composed, and produced for the legendary jazz musician Miles Davis in the early to late eighties and until Davis’ death. After completing four years of Visual Art studies at a private art high school in Chicago, and a couple semesters of art college, Jae dropped out of school to Commit to the exploration of Hip Hop music.
Along with rapper Monroe (T.R.E) Smith, and his brother and Jae’s childhood friend and producer Aaron Butler (Projeck), who passed away in 2009, formed the Hip Hop group Young Black Preachers in 2008. The Group released a self titled Ep of five tracks that served as an expression against the continuing outburst of gang violence, political, and religious corruption in Chicago. Although the group’s foundation is rooted in Hip Hop, there influences stretched as far as Punk Rock, Electro, and World Music. Following Projeck’s death, Jae released the 11 track Ep entitled Dxnce for free online. Grabbing the attention of Warp recording artist and Brainfeeder CEO, Flying Lotus, Jae was soon invited to become an artist on the West Coast Label, becoming one of the only Rapper/producers on the Label at the time. Currently Jeremiah Jae is working towards releasing his solo debut album for Warp Records and an EP for the Brainfeeder Imprint.

„Robots don’t Sleep“ Mixtape: Download

Robot Koch gets his inspiration from all kind of sources, so it is not a surprise, that his musical roots lie in having been a drummer in various punk and hardcore bands. From here he ventured into hip hop, jazz, electronic music and DJing. After innovating the electronic dancehall sound with numerous releases of his band “Jahcoozi“, he began his solo career in 2009. His first solo album, “Death Star Droid“, which was followed in 2010 by „Listen to them Fade“ (both released on Project: Mooncircle), expanded his previous musical oeuvre stylistically towards new forms of club music like dubstep and future hip hop. His albums tie together deep bass, syncopated beats, acoustic instruments and sometimes even vocals and are more than just collections of fresh beats, but rather the musical statement from an exceptional producer. One could say, that he is restless and bustling: Besides touring through Japan, USA and Africa, he writes music for other musicians like Graciela Maria or for his „Berlin – Nairobi“ project, where him, Jahcoozi, Gebrüder Teichmann and Modeselektor teamed up with Kenyan artists.

Armchair Dancefloor #016 mix by Blue Daisy: Download

“This is a weird story, but it is entirely true… basically I used to go by the name Re:Kwes but I felt I needed a change in name as my sound was gradually heading towards a new direction. I did a whole lot of brainstorming but came up with jack shit, until one day it came to me… This day was a clear blue sky day and I was strolling through my local park, Regents Park, and came across a flower which looked like a Daisy, though I’m not sure if it was, but anyway I came across this flower and it seemed to stand out from the rest on a patch of grass that was ever so green. I interpreted this image as a sign of individuality, an outcast in society; but a product of its own. Amongst repeated action there stands this autonomous soul who chooses not to follow others but instead remain outside the crowd yet still somehow within it… The green grass represented the sign of greatness to come and on this clear blue sky day the name was born; Blue Daisy, a representative of individuality. And that’s what I look to represent with my music.”

Comfort Fit’s career is one of a young music addict: Being introduced to the world of audio sampling with 4, mixing tapes with 9, djing at clubs with 12, producing beats with 14 and finally releasing the debut album with 18 on Megahertz Records. Comfort Fit’s versatile influences range from early Detroit techno and minimal electronica to jazz, broken beats and hip hop. This makes it easy for him to invisibly switch between musical styles within a finger snap, taking the listener onto long and exciting journeys. Wisely using music codes of genres such as hiphop, dubstep and techno as a mere comic template, Comfort Fit has inspired hip hop and techno artists around the world with his heavy beat techniques. Besides his numerous remix requests, even major brands have discovered his outstanding production skills and request his music for advertisements regularly.

fLako Mix for Gilles Peterson on BBC Radio: Download

fLako, Chile born and now living in both Berlin and London is one of Europe`s top producers at the moment. Whoever you ask within this beat world will give you the same answer. Though first appearing on Beatnicks Vol.2 with his banging “Inside“ Track already, it was not until his outstanding “Vortex Cookies“ Remix in late 2008 that the world took notice for real. His take on the Robot Koch produced Track with Cerebral Vortex on vocal duties has been championed by Gaslampkiller, Hudson Mohawke and many more and even got labeled “Track of the year“ by Jay Scarlett. Damn right so. Eversince fLako keeps on making waves always bringing you something surprising, be it with a contribution to Gilles Peterson‘s Bubblers Compilation, his 30 track heavy Beattape “First Spaceshit On The Moon“, unofficial remixes or productions for Shuanise or Amenta. He just finished his highly anticipated debut EP ‘Mini Tollbooth‘ and did we already mention he is straight KILLING IT live? As energetic as it gets going and far away from Laptop staring boredom he shows musical versatility too.
