This time we want to try out an new format, called “Behind the Beats“. Besides the usual interview guest, which is French producer opti and his Techno alias PEEV, we asked submerse, who is releasing his debut album “Slow Waves” later this month, to give us a little exclusive insight into his production process.

Pierre Serafini was born on 1982 in the East of France, living the successive de-industrialization of his homeland, year after year, and developing a taste for haunting textures, melancholic soundscapes and abstract percussions. Starting out as a guitarist in several shoegaze bands, he grew an obsessive collection of analogue effects unit to shape and distort his sounds, following the likes of Radiohead‘s Jonny Greenwood or Sonic Youth‘s Jim O’Rourke. During sessions of what would be his last band adventure, he discovers sampling with an Akai S2000 device – Then everything changes.

He sets up in Lyon in 2004, starts producing as opti, and will reveal a steady obsession for textures and harmonies, and a special interest for remixing. Over more than a decade, opti will share stages with the likes of Blawan, Tricky, Mount Kimbie, Plaid, Shifted, Pearson Sound, Joy O, Julio Bashmore, Loefah, Untold, Maya Jane Coles, Phon.O, 16 Bit, Hatcha, Lone, Filastine, High Tone, Venetian Snares and a lot more.

His first album “The Letter D” was released on Irish label Acroplane on October 2010. His second EP, “The Moon Dissolved” was self-released on January 2012, gaining support from the likes of Laurent Garnier and others. His third release “Need and Hostility” was also self-released in July 2013, and was hilighted by music magazine XLR8R. From 2008 to 2012, he ran the label Airflex Labs, developing a strong bridge between UK’s electronic scene and the french audience.

Launched in 2013 as an alter ego to opti‘s moody and experimental electronic music, PEEV is all about Techno and Dancefloor crossovers.

Meanwhile, opti produced “BB Bleu” the debut single of American singer Kid A for Ninja Tune, which was remixed by Daedalus, Eliphino and Dolor, and is currently working on some new productions for her upcoming album.”

The show includes music from submerse, opti, PEEV, Jamie XX, Fedbymachines, Lower Spectrum, Castanets, Sean Piñeiro, Anenon, Sieren, Fil Cube, Krts and many more…

Benjamin Wynn a.k.a. Deru is an Emmy Award-winning composer, sound designer and producer.

Deru grew up in Chicago, where his earliest influences came across the airwaves of the legendary University of Chicago radio station, WHPK. Listening to hip-hop and specifically its use of static in music, Wynn began his first forays into manipulating sound. He continued his sonic explorations at the California Institute of the Arts, where he studied synthesis, digital signal processing, acoustics, music theory and composition, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music Technology. While at CalArts, Ben also delved into world music, studying Balinese gamelan, African drumming and hand percussion. His multi-layered musical sensibility combines hip-hop, electronic, world music and classical composition.

As Deru, Wynn has released three albums on Mush Records, Merck Records, and Neo Ouija respectively, as well as remixes and tracks for compilations on labels like Hometapes, Ghostly International, Mille Plateaux, and a ballet score for Wayne McGregor and the Paris Opera Ballet. 2014 ushers in the next phase of Deru‘s journey, as he partners with Friends of Friends for “1979“, his most extraordinary project to date.

The show includes acts like submerse, Deru, Kiasmos, Taylor McFerrin, Emily King, Metome, Sylvan Esso, Nowon, Sieren, Kurtane, Ghostek, Memotone, Soosh, Memoosh, Akkord, Fatima, Electric Wire Hustle, fLako and many more…

Growing up on a unique mix of street music and geek culture, kidkanevil aka Gerard Roberts has developed a distinctive and progressive sound over the years. A keen creative from an early age, his progression into music production was a natural one spurred on by an obsessive interest in hip-hop, anime OSTs and computer game music. Equally at home making Kaiju sized beats as he is delicate electro acoustic soundscapes, the kid has earned the praise and respect of numerous peers and journalists.
A Red Bull Music Academy alumni kidk continues to display an impressive work rate, now with four solo albums to his name plus collaborative project Kidsuke alongside visionary Japanese producer Daisuke Tanabe. He also co-produced the epic Stateless album ‘Matilda’ for Ninja Tune, released an official beat tape tribute to American electronics pioneer Raymond Scott and produced a number of tracks for UK rap giants Foreign Beggars, not to mention an almost non stop trail of remixes and productions. With his new album ‘My Little Ghost’ this is just the beginning for this truly innovative and experimental producer.

Prefuse 73:

Prefuse 73 is the alias of Scott Herren, an experimental hip-hop producer who is arguably one of the pioneers of futuristic beat and bass music and bridged hiphop and more experimental electronic music. Herren began his career working in commercial studios in Atlanta, but later went on to more experimental work. His first record under the Prefuse name, Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives, not only buried but cut up and spliced raps as well as allowing some more straightforward vocals from several MCs. The 2003 follow-up, One Word Extinguisher, carried on in a similar vein. That same year, Warp released Extinguished: Outtakes – a fascinating EP of beats and samples that ran through 23 tracks in about 35 minutes.
Surrounded by Silence was released in March of 2005, featuring collaborations with rappers Ghostface and Aesop Rock, plus Blonde Redhead and EL-P. Three months later, an EP of recordings made with the band the Books appeared, titled Reads the Books. The next Prefuse record, 2006‘s Security Screenings, was relatively collaboration-free; it featured only two guests, Four Tet‘s Kieran Hebden and Tunde Adebimpe from TV on the Radio. Preparations, featuring Battles drummer John Stanier on one track, followed in 2007, and Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian appeared in early 2009. Herren focused on collaborative projects in 2010, flexing his production muscles via dates, remixes, or cameos. His 2011 production The Only She Chapters continued the familial feeling, with a wealth of features for female vocalists. Herren has also worked under his own name, and that of Savath + Savalas and Delarosa & Asora. His project with Zach Hill, Diamond Watch Wrists, released the 2009 LP Ice Capped at Both Ends. in 2013 he released a collaborative album under the name Sons of the Morning together with Teebs on a new imprint called Yellow Year, a label aimed for collaborative projects.”

Glenn Astro:
Currently residing in Minden, the Essen native Glenn Astro has spent a bit more than half his life DJing and producing, first in the realm of hip-hop and more recently with an ear toward dance music. After his first releases in this style in 2011 and 2012, Glenn really went for it in 2013 with a trio of EPs that showed hip-hop’s soul and house music’s drive are in no way mutually exclusive. This 26-year-old may embrace the latter these days, but when you close your eyes and let his gritty low-end do its dirty work, you’ll hear plenty of the former’s bump still kicking around in there. His first EP of 2014 is a case in point: Tartelet hits catalog number 27 with gritty soul music for 120-BPM dance floors.

Walrus Ghost is the working pseudonym of producer/composer Christian Banks. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Banks currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Walrus Ghost‘s ‘Uplifting Themes For The Naysayer’ is essentially a conversation between organic sound and artificial design. Immersed in rich textures and the meticulous processing of analog instrumentation, the songs facilitate moments of exchange between tranquil subtleties and abrasive tensions. These intertwining moments come and go as the record plays out, but they follow us throughout, leaving us with a soundscape that exists in both beautiful harmony and eerie decay.

Synkro:

Making his name primarily through his dubstep/two-step output, Manchester’s Joe Synkro effortlessly transcends electronic genres with his brand of deep bass driven music, hot stepping between 140 and 170bpm with a wide range of thoughtful and, at times, beautifully delicate sounds. Synkro proved himself a force to be reckoned with in 2010, releasing some of his finest work to date in the Autonomic framework showcased on the Autonomic Podcast’s & on labels such as Exit (Mosaic Music EP), Blackout Music, & Med School (New Blood) including a remix of one of his tunes from the Exit Recordings label boss and noted electronic visionary dBridge..

Although still maintaining a presence in the wider bass music sphere, Synkro showcased his diversity in tempo, structure and new sound with the superlative ‘Reservoir’ bw ‘Just Say’ on Box Clever & ‘Angels VIP’ bw ‘Good Loving’ on Smokin’ Sessions. Major support for Synkro music has come from names like dBridge, Instra:mental, ASC, Chris Coco, Giles Peterson, Brendon Moeller, Mary Anne Hobbs, London Electricity, Kasra & many more. This has displayed a maturation of his sound & style, and with material of various tempos scheduled for release on respected labels labels such as Exit, Autonomic, Brownswood Recordings, Blackout Music, Critical, Warm Communications, Pushing Red, Mindset, Box Clever any many more, it has become increasingly obvious that this will be the year when Synkro takes his deserved place amongst the luminaries of the electronic music world.

Indigo:

Manchester based artist Indigo has been blurring the ethereal boundaries of Electronica since his first 12″ release on his own label ‘Mindset’ in 2008. While some find a steady groove and settle into a formula, he has been evolving with releases and remixes on a selection of diverse labels, holding a strong foundation with his own imprint. Taking all tempos and throwing them into a diverse melting pot of sonics, and performing memorable DJ sets to the same level of eclecticism.

Mindset debuted emerging talents AnD, Kowton, xxxy, HxdB and Hatti Vatti while allowing established artists Synkro and 16Bit a platform for their more introspective work. With this unique take, Mindset releases gained worldwide support from seminal musical prodigies Skream, Brendon Moeller, Illumsphere, Headhunter & Mary Anne Hobbs, airing on Rinse FM & Radio 1. Following debuts on Mindset, artists have gone on to release on influential labels Exit, Autonomic, Tectonic, Med School, Fabric, Critical, Keysound, Idle Hands, Frozen Border & Horizontal Ground.

Dauwd:

Early releases ‘Could It Be’ and ‘What’s There’ gained support from some of music’s most important names. Benji B, Gilles Peterson, and Jamie XX were early champions, Ikopol was released as part of Adult Swim’s {UNCLASSIFIED} compilation alongside tracks from Burial, Kode9 and Untold.
Having toured extensively as a DJ, headlining club shows all around the UK and Europe, Dauwd has also won over the likes of Nick Höppner (OstGut Ton) and Kompakt label boss Michael Mayer who included Ikopol on his mix for Faze Magazine.
New productions move away from the UK sound, drawing on house and techno and expressing a long-standing love of these genres. Clearly the dance floor has permeated into the studio.
Dauwd creates music with complexity most contemporary producers shy away from. Found sounds are thickly laden over multi-timbred synths. Vocal and instrumental stabs punctuate organic and evolving passages guided always by driving percussion and immaculate low-end production. His productions are full and intricate with a wealth of sounds building warm atmospheres that are unusual within dance music.

The show includes acts like Dauwd, Deft, The Range, Barrio lindo, Paul White, Glows in the Dark, Tom Day & Monsoonsiren, Young Fathers, opti, Kyson and many more…

Finest Ego | Radio with Jay Scarlett, Julien Mier & Kyson on BLN.FM

60 minutes with exclusive and unreleased tracks. Hosted by Gordon Gieseking and Malte Tarnow on Radio BLN.FM. ▸▸ Every second Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday of the month (June, 11th – 8pm / 12th – 9pm / 16th – 10PM CET).

Jay Scarlett:
Jay has been a maniac record collector since he was a Teenager and stepped into music production in 2000. Soon after, he became DJ for the infamous UK FutureSoul group Spacek. Jay also released the highly applauded ‘Beat Dimensions” compilation series alongside Amsterdam’s Cinnaman, featuring artists such as Hudson Mohawke, Danny Breaks, Mike Slott, Fulgeance, Sa-Ra, Paul White, Exile, Flying Lotus, Samiyam, Onra & Pursuit Grooves amongst many others. Jay is also well known known for his label Ubeat Records and his Samurai FM radio show ‘AmpSoul’.

Kyson:
Kyson is one of those artists who has always seen electronic music as the platform through which he feels most comfortable explaining himself, projecting his imagination, his musical narratives, and the imagery that constantly churns through his head. It’s the story of many young, modern musicians – they recycle, re-pitch, warp and sample the electronic sound scape that has surrounded them throughout their formative years, and they insert their own voice into the ever-growing discourse that is today’s musical sphere. An early lover of hip-hop and sampled records, Kyson became a student of music in Sydney, Australia. Honing his skills in sound design, recording and mastering, he has since embarked on a journey to discover his own unique path toward self-expression. He has spent years traveling the world – embracing and documenting the images and sounds of pristine snow covered mountains, the chaos and cacophony of some of the world’s largest cities, and the peaceful, leafy and sun-drenched comfort of the suburbs in his home town. Distance between friends, family and loved-ones; memories of places once visited; images viewed through the lens of a camera; the sound of a bargain bin record bought in some far-flung corner of our ever-shrinking globe. These are Kyson’s inspirations, his motivation, and the filter through which his music must be heard.

Julien Mier:
Julien is a young composer and producer from the Netherlands, known for his eclectic and washed out collision of musical genres. His signature is this width approach of fragmented melodies, packed in a palette of, sometimes almost waterfall kind of textures and dreamy, melancholic stories.
In case it’s not obvious, Julien as a kid was raised on Captain Beefheart, Mouse on Mars, Sugarcubes, Brian Eno and Sigur Ros. In a peaceful little village in the dunes called Santpoort, where he had years of classical training before moving on to the digital realm. But inspired by nature as well as improvisation he utilizes a wide variety of samples and acoustic instruments along with the more electronic elements. What also informs his music is a lifelong talent for lucid dreaming. An example he cites is the trumpet of a death march… a concrete thought that quickly steers wildly out of context.

The show includes acts like Jay Scarlett, Kyson, Julien Mier, Cluekid, Daixie, Deft, Hanami, Indian Wells, Pedestrian, PYUR, Rain Dog, Tendts, Xxanaxx and many more…

Daedelus
“Eccentric, Contagious, Electrifying. These are some words you could use to describe American electronic artist Daedelus (Alfred Darlington).
To experience Daedelus in all his unbridled splendor is only achievable over a large scope – over the course of a shocking number of LPs, EPs, remixes, and most importantly live improvised appearances; a portrait of an unique artist has been painted in bold strokes.”

Salva
Growing up in Chicago in the 80’s, Salva cites early inspiration in all sorts of of electronic and sampled-based music ranging from electro, juke, analog house, ghetto house, underground hip hop and bass productions. With a strong foot in all of these idioms, Salva creates a future-leaning style of electronic dance music that is all his own. FINEST EGO | Radio with Hidden Orchestra on BLN.FM

60 minutes with exclusive and unreleased tracks. Hosted by Gordon Gieseking and Malte Tarnow on Radio BLN.FM. ▸▸ Every second Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday of the month (April, 9th – 8pm / 10th – 9pm / 14th – 10PM CET).

Hidden Orchestra are a quartet from Edinburgh, Scotland, who make music that incorporates and redefines elements of jazz, classical, rock, hip-hop and electronica to form a deeply original and cohesive whole resplendent with layers of energy, emotion and atmosphere.

An intense and rewarding listening experience, both live and on record, their sound encompasses the energy and production techniques of studio-produced beats, but replacing synths and drum machines with natural/acoustic sounds and instruments for an emotionally potent and dynamic style. It is a sonic blueprint built on contrasts – experimental without losing accessibility, electronic and acoustic, complex and simple, dark and energetic whilst intricate and calm.

Hidden Orchestra is the solo studio project of composer/producer Joe Acheson – the core quartet of the live act is formed around the duelling drum kits, percussion and electronic pads of two drummers, Tim Lane and Jamie Graham, completed by Poppy Ackroyd’s distinctive, multi-faceted violin and piano playing, with Acheson on bass and electronics. Hidden Orchestra have seen their star rise steadily and emphatically since the release of their debut album on Tru Thoughts in 2010, Night Walks, with an organic buzz building as they have toured their highly in-demand live show at clubs and major festivals throughout over 20 countries in Europe and beyond.

The music of Hidden Orchestra has been widely broadcast on the radio, with live sessions on BBC R6 for Cerys Matthews and BBC Radio Scotland, plays from Gilles Peterson (BBC R1), Jamie Cullum (BBC R2), Radio Nova & FIP (France), Radio 1 Prague, XFM among the many highlights.

Finest Ego | Radio with Soosh on BLN.FM

60 minutes with exclusive and unreleased tracks. Hosted by Gordon Gieseking and Malte Tarnow on Radio BLN.FM. ▸▸ Every second Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday of the month (February, 12th – 8pm / 13th – 9pm / 17th – 10PM CET).

Soosh aka Soroosh Khavari was born in Iran, escaping to Scotland fleeing persecution when a year old with his family. Taking a year out from his job as a dentist, Soosh went travelling and found his niche in BC, Canada. Armed with a tape recorder, sampler, couple of synthesizers and an overflowing heart, there he finally managed to finish his first works.
After EP appearances on numerous labels, the artists’ debut long player ‘Colour is Breathe‘ on Error Broadcast explores the folds that fuse textural ambience and humanised beats, whilst adding a euphoric pop-twist.
Sooshs’ trademark low-swung hip hop beats and organic instrumentation is countered and enhanced by moments of dreamy and endearing delicacy. ‘Colour is Breathe‘ is both intricate and intimate; its wispy notes and pastel melodies at times make the album a headphone affair. Equally, however, these are songs to be shared on discerning dance floors as slow, organic dance music.

The show includes acts like Soosh, Kixnare, Ta-Ku, Kidkanevil, Daisuke Tanabe, KRTS, Cokiyu, Singing Statues, Bnjmn, Shigeto, Hazeem, Kiyoko, Synkro, Bering Strait, Teebs, Submerse, Sorrow, Sieren, Memotone, Memoosh, Amatorski, and many more…

Finest Ego | Radio with VLEK DATA: Ssaliva / Cupp Cave on BLN.FM

60 minutes with exclusive and unreleased tracks. Hosted by Gordon Gieseking and Malte Tarnow on Radio BLN.FM. ▸▸ Every second Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday of the month (December, 11th – 8pm / 12th – 9pm / 16th – 10PM CET).

Vlek Data:
Vlek is Brussels’ patois for Junk. Cheap goods. For things that just fall apart as soon as you hold’ em. The name is testament to their willingness in creating just the opposite: Something that will last in a country that seems to be disintegrating before our very eyes. Sat atop of the rubble of what once was Belgium, they’re firing multi-coloured flares in all directions in an attempt to attract the attention of any international rescue teams in the vicinity. For better or for worse, they decided to exfiltrate those that could be saved.

Ssaliva / Cupp Cave:
Step forward Francois Boulanger, a young man who one day discovered SoundForge and never looked back since, transforming himself into various musical entities in the process. First there was Kingfisherg which soon enough led to Cupp Cave, an alias that originally brought him to the attention of a hungry worldwide scene thanks to its chunky, hip hop inspired rhythms. Seemingly not one to stand still for very long, Francois decided to continue his musical mutations further with yet another alias, Ssaliva. Beatless and atmospheric would be two obvious adjectives to use when talking about Ssaliva’s music, an ethereal sonic world inhabited by ideas made real and which take their full potential when experienced live.

BEATSURFING is an iPad Organic MIDI Controller Builder.
This Application lets you to draw a 3-dimensional controller which you can use, like any other, by tapping. But Beatsurfing allows more: you design your own paths until they suit you, follow routes, take turns and cuts with your fingers and collide with objects along the way, triggering melody, beats, effects. Movement is what it’s all about.

Lastly, we have a special live-mix from Playpad Circus to round out the show and celebrate the release of his “Phantasma” EP on Equinox Records.

The show includes acts like Ssaliva, Cupp Cave, Playpad Circus, 40 Winks, Long Arm, Lomovolokno, Krts, Vuurwerk, Robots Don’t Sleep, Robot Koch, John LaMonica, Sun Glitters, Thriftworks, DH the Mythicalifornian, Insightful, Darius Vaikas, La Boum Fatale, Sieren, Richard Colvaen, Young Wonder, Ambassadeurs, Planas, Space Out Family, and many more…

Memotone is a multi-instrumentalist and producer. Drawing inspiration from a wide range of sources, his sound is made up of layered instrumentation over the top of field recordings, conversation, atmospheres and electronica programming all tied up with live acoustic drums and binaural percussion, often using an MPC 1000 for live edits. Also showing a keen interest in sound-scape and textural experimentation.

Daisuke Tanabe is a music producer from Chiba, Japan. The former art student who also lived and worked in London for some years is currently based in Tokyo, where he assembles his exceptional pieces of music. He counts the likes of Bonobo, Daedelus and Wire Magazine amongst his fans and has remixed, produced and collaborated with some of electronic music’s finest, including the likes of Stateless, Andreya Triana, Foreign Beggars, Illum Sphere, Dorian Concept, and, most recently, with Japanese electronic artist Daisuke Tanabe as kidsuke. He has released music on labels such as Ninja Tune, Project Mooncircle, Brownswood, Error Broadcast and First Word and has played shows from Sonar to Hoya:Hoya and Low End Theory. Mike Gao is a music technology researcher, holds a Masters degree in Music Technology at Stanford and is pursuing his PhD in Electrical Engineering at UCSD. After a career as underground Hip Hop and Scratch DJ in Chicago (working with such names as Qwel, Mestizo and Luckyiam) he began partaking and winning in numerous beat battles, Low End Theory being the most prominent one, which makes him one of the best kept secrets in the Los Angeles beat scene. He released music on labels such as All City with Tokimonsta, Galapagos4, Project: Mooncircle and many more.

Going to be released upcoming February, the second edition of our “Faces“ series will exhibit works by the two extraordinary producers Daisuke Tanabe and Mike Gao. Again, coming from very distinct biographical backgrounds – despite their obvious Asian descent – the two are connected through their artistic excellence and uncompromising musical creations and visions. In symbiosis with these nocturnal flying mammals they use their ultra-precise sonic waves to navigate imperturbably through dark nights, leaving their prey with no chance of escape.
