Soft Fascination aims to highlight how everything we experience through our senses is tainted by interpretation. Every once in a while we experience total abandonment of this and find ourselves truly engulfed in the moment. Viewing the world with a ‘Soft Fascination’ means a heightened sense of awareness, of wonder and curiosity towards things that may seem commonplace or everyday. I have always been fascinated with art tinged with melancholy or sadness, obsessed by the part of us that can’t leave behind the past and which holds on to certain moments or nostalgia.
On a personal level this EP reflects a moving of country and a new awakening or heightening of the senses. ‘Maya‘ and ‘A Haunting‘ play upon imagery of illusion as I spent a long time trying to figure the effect asthetics or environment can have upon the way we process thoughts and emotions. Macondo is a reference to the fictional town in ‘100 Years Of Solitude’ where the theme of hauntings and illusion resonate strongly. I thought I could use this to further represent this idea of familiar environments and how they trigger memories which ‘haunt’ us. Shared Skies and Second Suns is a basic yearning to maintain relationships across timezones and a pondering upon all things which bind people together. City In Arms Wide Stretched aims to leave the EP open ended and perhaps on a positive note.
